False Ceiling 101: Gypsum vs PVC vs POP — Which is Right for You?

A false ceiling can completely transform a room's character. But with so many material options, how do you pick the right one? Here's a clear breakdown.

A well-designed false ceiling does three things: it hides unsightly wiring and ducts, creates defined zones within a room, and dramatically elevates a space's look with integrated lighting. But the material you choose makes a big difference.

Gypsum Board Ceilings

Gypsum is the most popular choice for modern interiors. It offers clean, smooth surfaces that can be curved, stepped, or coffered. It's ideal for living rooms and bedrooms where you want a sharp, contemporary finish. Brands like Armstrong and Saint-Gobain offer excellent gypsum boards.

  • Pros: Smooth finish, fire-resistant, takes paint well, flexible shapes
  • Cons: Vulnerable to water damage — not ideal for bathrooms or kitchens
  • Cost: ₹80–120 per sq ft installed

PVC False Ceilings

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) ceilings are the go-to choice for wet areas — bathrooms, kitchens, and balconies. They're completely waterproof, easy to clean, and available in many textures and colours. They're also significantly more affordable.

  • Pros: 100% waterproof, low maintenance, durable, budget-friendly
  • Cons: Less design flexibility, can look plastic-y if wrong shade is chosen
  • Cost: ₹45–80 per sq ft installed

POP (Plaster of Paris) Ceilings

POP is the traditional choice, especially for ornate, decorative designs — cornices, medallions, arches. A skilled POP craftsman can create one-of-a-kind ceiling designs. However, it's heavier and requires more skilled labour.

  • Pros: Highly customisable, classic look, can be painted in any shade
  • Cons: Cracks over time with building movement, harder to repair
  • Cost: ₹60–100 per sq ft installed

Which Should You Choose?

For living rooms and bedrooms: Gypsum. For bathrooms and kitchens: PVC. For grand, traditional interiors: POP. In most projects, we use a combination — gypsum for the main areas with PVC in wet zones.
