Before You Build a Modular Kitchen: 7 Things to Know

A modular kitchen is one of the biggest investments in your home. Avoid costly mistakes with these seven must-know tips from our design team.

A modular kitchen can completely transform how your family lives in your home. But it's also an investment that requires careful planning. Here are seven things every homeowner should know before construction begins.

1. Measure Everything Twice

Site measurements — not builder drawings — must be taken before design begins. Walls are rarely perfectly straight. Electrical points, drain locations, and window positions all affect where cabinets can go.

2. Choose the Right Layout

L-shape works for most Indian kitchens. U-shape is ideal if you have more than 8 feet of wall space on three sides. Straight (single wall) works for compact spaces. Island kitchens are aspirational but need at least a 10×12 ft room.

3. Cabinet Material Matters More Than Colour

The shutters (the visible doors) are what most people focus on, but the carcass (the box behind) is what holds up for 15 years. Specify BWR (Boiling Water Resistant) plywood like Greenply or CenturyPly for carcasses, not particle board.

4. Counter Depth is Often Ignored

Standard counter depth is 24 inches (600mm). If your kitchen is narrow, going to 21 inches saves space. If you have a large range hood, the cabinet above the hob needs special clearance. These details matter at the design stage.

5. Lighting is Non-Negotiable

Under-cabinet LED strips are a game-changer for kitchen task lighting. Ensure electrical points are planned at counter level (not just at ceiling level) before cabinets are installed — retrofitting is expensive.

6. Plan for Ventilation from Day One

A chimney or exhaust fan location must be fixed before the upper cabinet layout is finalised. A chimney needs a dedicated circuit and an outlet path to the outside wall or terrace.

7. Always Get a 3D Preview First

Never approve a modular kitchen from 2D drawings alone. A photorealistic 3D render lets you see the actual colours, finishes, and proportions — and catch mistakes before a single screw is drilled.

At Awadh Interior Designer, every modular kitchen project begins with a detailed 3D walkthrough. No execution starts until you're completely satisfied. Contact us to start your kitchen project.
